Things I've learned this week...

1.) How to freeze meat properly. My friend, Dee Dee, is a wealth of information when it comes to saving and stock-piling. Today she gushed to me about the deal at Kroger for Chef Boyardee on sale for $.56 and using the $3 off your next purchase four times in a row! I love that lady!! Being that she is so wise when it comes to saving money, I inquired as to what she does to keep her meat from getting freezer burn. You know, we savers like to buy lots of meat when it's on sale and store it in our deep freezers for the next Y2K disaster.

Here's her secret: She puts the meat, whatever it is, in a store-brand baggy. She rolls all the air out and then wraps it in butcher paper. You can get butcher paper at Wal-Mart for around $5. She also shared that she has been able to use meat for up to a year and a half after she packaged it! Can you believe that?! 18 months! WOW!

Now - my question to you all is this: Do you stock pile a lot of meat and then use it all down, or keep a stuffed freezer? Hmmm.

2.) We can start making our own dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent, fabric softener, and dish soap! Here are some links for you to check out. If you decide to try one or have been doing it for awhile, let me know your views on this concept. Most of the postings I've seen about this subject promote the financial savings, but more than that, the indpendence it gives us from commercial products. I thought this was an interesting view and wonder what other homemade recipes I can find. Here are some of the concoctions I've found.

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent
Homemade Dish Soap
Homemade Laundry Detergent
Homemade Fabric Softener

Things to keep in mind as you search for money saving ideas:
You don't have to do EVERYTHING!
Just try one thing at a time. It's like habits.
It takes 21 days to form a good habit and 3 days to break it!

Good luck and happy habit forming!

  1. cool :) I have made home made cleaning products - I LOVE them I find them to be much more effective and TONS cheeper. have not tried to make my own dish soap, landry detergent though.

With our meat I rebag it, lable it and date it, then I use the older meat 1st and newer meat last, but I continue to buy when its on sale.
we just had a turkey that I bought from Thanksgiving :) (when they were cheep!)
